Our story

Vaka was founded in 1949 by two Danes, Hans Frost and Niels Jörgensen. The company's original purpose was outlined in a press release in Morgunblaðið on September 28, 1949.

The company Vaka has taken on many kinds of assistance work. It has a tow truck ready day and night to go to the scene in case of an accident, if vehicles are damaged so they cannot be driven, if vehicles go off the road or get stuck in snow, and so on.

To this day these are Vaka's main tasks, and the company has been there for car owners for over 70 years.

In 1958 Hjalti Stefánsson took ownership of the company and ran it until 1974, when he sold it to Ingólfur Sigurðsson and family. In 2004 the brothers Einar and Sveinn Ásgeirssynir bought the company, and they have run it ever since.

Vaka provides a wide range of car-related services. Most people know Vaka's tow truck service and Vökuportið, where car parts could long be picked up. Tire service is also a major part of the operation, both the sale of new and used tires and tire changes and wheel balancing.

Vaka is also the largest receiver of cars for recycling, taking in about 400 cars every month. Today about 30 people work for the company.

Questions and answers about Vaka's operations

Can you remove a car parked in a private parking space?

Yes, we remove cars from private parking spaces, but the owner of the space must then submit a transport request. If the space belongs to a homeowners association, the request must come from the chair of the association or a party who demonstrably has the board's authority to demand removal.

What should I do if my car has been taken into custody by Vaka?

The best thing is to call us at 567 6700 and confirm that your car is with us. You can then come to us at Héðinsgata 2 and collect it against payment of the costs of transport, registration and storage.

Can I have you recycle a car I want to get rid of?

Yes, Vaka is the largest receiver of cars for recycling in Iceland. You can fill out a recycling request on this site and we will prepare a recycling certificate for you to hand in to the Icelandic Transport Authority. The certificate can also be completed electronically on island.is. We collect your car free of charge in the capital area, or you can bring it to us at Héðinsgata 2.

How much do I get paid for a car I hand in for recycling?

You receive 30,000 ISK from Úrvinnslusjóður, the Icelandic Recycling Fund.
